stats referrer mark as spam

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Looking at the stats for Dec 2nd, I see that one of the referrers is duplicheck.com, a site that checks for plagiarism. There is a “more actions” icon next to the referrer. When I click on it, it says “mark as spam” in red.

Is this WordPress suggesting that I might like to mark that site as spam? or it has already marked it as spam?

Note – I have not done anything.

    Please enlighten me.

    Thanks.

    Brian

  • Hi Brian,

Referrer stats are recorded whenever someone reaches your site by clicking on a link on another site, provided the other site sends us referrer headers.

But it’s also possible for sites to send fake referrer headers, making it appear as if you got traffic from a particular site. Spammers use this technique to get traffic when you click on that link to see where your traffic came from. Or spammers just link to random sites for reasons only they can fathom :)

If you suspect referrals to your site might be fake, we give you the option to mark a referrer like this in your stats as spam. This won’t prevent anyone from reaching your site when they click a link on that site, but it will prevent any traffic from that site appear in your referrers section in stats.

  • Note this option will appear for any link in your referrers section, except for a few whitelisted domains that cannot be marked as spam.

So it’s not in any way a suggestion that the site might be spam. It’s an option for you to mark it as spam, if you suspect/believe referrals from that particular link are spam :)
