Strange pop-up ad window on my blog

Hi! Today when I saw my blog, there was this weird pop up ad on it – I know WP sometimes runs ads on free blogs, but since they’d never used pop-up windows, I became a little concerned (additionally, it was something about the NSA surveillance, which made me even more nervous – did not click it but closed the window). Is this normal now, or could it be because of a breach in security or…? Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I understand it is alarming (and should have been pre-announced) but it is not simply harmless; it is awesome.

If you let the pop up resolve, it talks about how the NSA is illegally invading the privacy of everyone who uses the internet (in the US or elsewhere) and describes how to protect yourself from NSA intrusion and surveillance. It is part of the Take Back the Net initiative which continues throughout July, and clearly Automattic is a big supporter.

I suppose if you subscribed to updates about WordPress.com you’d have gotten an email, but as I don’t, I haven’t seen one. I don’t doubt we will be getting LOTS of reports about this by dawn.

Anyway, it’s all cool and having X’d it once you should not see it again unless you clear your browser cookies.

Oh, ok – thanks for the reply! I became a little concerned since I’d never seen popups in my blog, and hadn’t gotten an email, or seen anything on my dash about this initiative either. Good on Automattic for making a stand.

I think if you supported the great internet blackout this came up automatically, but I’m not sure http://internetdefenseleague.org/
