strategy for dev site domain/url

    The company I work for is planning on purchasing the “Business” plan for our new site, but during development we’ll keep our existing drupal site running.

    What is the best strategy for accomplishing this?

    Should we use a new domain, such as dev.ourcompanyname.com (and then put in an A record to point to wordpress.com servers for the “dev” sub-domain)? If so, what is the strategy for switching this over to http://www.ourcompanyname.com when the dev work is complete?

    Or should we use something like ourcompanyname.wordpress.com during dev? Then same question… how do we go about switching to the proper domain when the dev work is complete?
