Stretching an image for background use.

  How do I stretch a background image so that it is not tiled?

  I have uploaded a photo into my media library for wordpress.com. I have checked the dimensions on the photo and they are of large quantity [1164 X 870 pixels]. Yet when I select the photo to not be tiled the photo is displayed as teeny tiny!!! Please HELP!
