Suddenly Innundated with spam
-
I have an account for a website that I rarely visit. I occasionally get notice of a comment from WordPress that I need to moderate (maybe one every couple of months). They’re always nonsense/gibberish spam. When I visited my website I saw there were 45 unanswered spam messages. I decided to delete them all after first marking them as spam. Since then I get hundreds of WordPress spam a day. How can I stop this?

Hello –
Please tell us which site you’re working on so we can take a look. If the spam filter is catching these comments then there’s nothing else you need to worry about. If they aren’t getting caught, you need to mark them as spam, rather than delete them. This will teach the spam filter and it will respond accordingly with in a few weeks time.

That is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, which we really can’t help with here.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
In general, we recommend the Akismet plugin for stopping spam on self-hosted WordPress.org sites, it’s the same system we use here: https://akismet.com/
WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
