Switching domains

Currently we are using Go Daddy for our domain. Do we need to transfer from them to WordPress? I can’t find what the cost is for WordPress to take care of our domain when we transfer. Sorry, this is all new to me.

Hi there,
First, do you want to host your site with us on WordPress.com, or do you simply want to use the WordPress software? If the latter, you can use that with GoDaddy, and they should be able to help you switch over to a WordPress hosting plan with them.
If you want to move to specifically WordPress.com, then you start by setting up a free site with us where we’ll generate a free *.wordpress.com address for you. Then to use your own domain you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan, and then you have the choice of either keeping the domain registered at GoDaddy and simply connecting it here via a process called domain mapping, or you can transfer the domain registration to us entirely.
Either way, you would need to migrate any content you’d like to keep from the GoDaddy site to us before you disconnect the domain from the site on their end.

We already have an established website. We have been using it for years! It is very old and outdated and so we are wanting to use WordPress/Avada to freshen it up. I don’t want to switch over until the website is all completed though. Can I do this? I need the current site to run until we can switch. It is asking me to switch before. I am worried.
To use the Avada theme on a WordPress.com site you’ll need to be on our Business Plan.
Before you’ll be able to install that theme you will need to have a custom domain active on the site. But if you contact live chat support after buying your plan we can help you with a temporary solution until you’re ready to switch your domain.
In the initial signup, only select the free WordPress.com address and not a custom domain.
