Testing

Can I create another site to do some testing with a new theme and experiment with designs before making it go live?
I did try to make a quick test site but it wanted me to buy a domain, hosting etc. I am more looking for a solution where I can clone my existing site and make drastic changes to it in the background or offline then finalise it and go live. Is there a way to do this?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Here are visual instructions on how to create a new free .wordpress.com site:

Step 1: Select email, username, and password.
Step 2: select Blog for a .home.blog free site or Business for a .wordpress.com site.
Step 3: Select the Topic of your site.
Step 4: Type in the Title of site (optional).
Step 5: Type in the full, exact site address you want including the .wordpress.com or .home.blog subdomain (ex: freeexamplesite.wordpress.com, freeexampleblog.home.blog). The first option should be the free site that you manually typed in. Click select next to that option.
Step 6: At the very top, click the link that says: start with a free site.

Then, your free site should be created! Please follow those steps and if you have any questions, let us know.

When I am done creating this site, would I be able to transfer my domain to the new one?

Also, it won’t let me install a new theme until I pay £240. Is that correct? I want to install the Hello theme from Elementor.

Also, it seems I can’t really do much testing as it wont let me install the Hello theme or any plug ins without having to pay £240. I already have this on another site. Is there a way I can create another site with my existing account and then when it’s done, make it live?

  • Hi there,

When I am done creating this site, would I be able to transfer my domain to the new one?

That is not an issue – what you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. Once you are done developing the site, you can make the decision to transfer the domain over:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    map an existing domain:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Or even creating a new one:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

Also, it won’t let me install a new theme until I pay £240. Is that correct? I want to install the Hello theme from Elementor.

Yes, you will need to purchase the Business Plan which will allow you to install custom themes such as the Hello theme from Elementor. For more information, please take a look at the following support docs:

    http://wordpress.com/business
    https://wordpress.com/support/themes/uploading-setting-up-custom-themes/

To clarify, you are wanting to have both a test site and your main site to have the Business Plan features? If so, Business Plan is per site, so you would need two different plans for the two sites. Instead, what I would suggest is to use your main site as your test site, but keep it private. That way, you can use the Business Plan features to set up the site, but it is not live to the public.

    Hope this helps.
