The main WordPress directory – Not writable

    Ahoy!
I’m having some issues with permissions on my WP installation.

The Site Health function is showing the following under info:
The main WordPress directory Not writable

    And the following under status:
Background updates are not working as expected

Background updates ensure that WordPress can auto-update if a security update is released for the version you are currently using.

Passed No version control systems were detected.
Error Your installation of WordPress prompts for FTP credentials to perform updates. (Your site is performing updates over FTP due to file ownership. Talk to your hosting company.)

According to FileZilla the permissions are the following:
    All directories – 755
    All files – 644

Ownership of the html directory is my ftp account.
All other files/directories are owned by www-data

Is there something that I’m missing here? From what I can tell all the permissions are as they should be.

The installation was (maybe shamefully) not performed manually – I’m using a pre-installed server from Vultr. Don’t know if this will affect things at all.

I also have some questions regarding using subdomains for content uploads, but they’re more about the mechanics behind setting it up on the server rather than the WP side.

  • Hi there,

The best place to get help with that is to post in the official WordPress.org support forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

The forum you have posted is for the WordPress.com hosting platform, which is different than the WordPress software that your site is using. You can learn more about these differences here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Ah, my apologies! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though!

    All the best
