The visual editing environment seems to have dramatically changed.

The WordPress visual editor appears to have dramatically changed. The graphical interface is unfamiliar in regards to what I’ve been using for nearly a year, and I don’t see how I am to insert images, which is a problem, since my go-to move is to break up long blocks of text with amusingly captioned images.

Even worse, I loaded one of my existing published posts into the new visual editor, to see what would happen and it screwed up the formatting dramatically. I was afraid to do anything for fear of wrecking the existing page with an update.

Can I get back to the old visual editor? Is there a configuration option I’ve missed?

Best regards, I hope this gets resolved soon, I have some posts on draft, and they’re a bit messed up right now.

    Hi Pat,

Our team is working on some updates and changes to the new post page here: https://wordpress.com/post/

Currently, you can add images to your posts by dragging & dropping them in the space below the post editor to create a gallery. Our team is also working on updates to that feature to give more options for adding and working with media in that post editor.

In the meantime, if you prefer to add single images to your posts or work with another post editor, you can use the post editor under Posts > Add New in your blog’s dashboard. (You can get to that dashboard with the “Dashboard” link on your My Blogs page.)

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Thanks for the response.

I managed to get back to the regular visual editing environment, by previewing drafts and hitting the ‘edit’ link at the bottom of the preview.

For drafts I want to edit, from the Draft listings I’ve found hitting the EDIT button (that brings me into the new vis editor) is an action to avoid, because the formatting gets messed up, so I’m currently using the PREVIEW button and then going for the edit link.

I’ll do an experiment with the Posts> Add New command from the dashboard, as you suggest.

Thanks again for the feedback, let me know if what I’m saying needs to be clarified.

    Best regards,

    Pat

    Hi Pat,

That makes sense — I’m glad you found a way to get there. You can also get to that post editor by going to Posts > All Posts in your blog’s dashboard. From there you can hover over the title of the post you want to edit and click the Edit link that appears. (That can sometimes be more reliable than clicking the Edit link on the post preview.)

Just let me know if I can do anything more to help!

This is the best advice ever!

Going through the Dashboard keeps me in the environment I’m used to, I was going in via the Reader page -> My Blogs -> Posts and that was keeping me in the slightly less busy interface, which is not working out as well for me.

You’ve been very helpful, thanks, I’ll be fine from here on out. (I assume.)

    Best regards.

You’re very welcome. :) I’m glad that Dashboard link gets you back to where you want to be.

  • I have good news, the ‘add media’ button has returned:

Please take a look and let me know if you have any trouble.

Excellent! Add Media! Very nice, thanks.

  • And the crew is still working on more. I think the new interface will be pretty cool once the bugs get worked out.
