Theme layout problem- preview doesn't match activated theme

I’m temporarily the administrator for a WordPress.com site using the Twenty Ten theme. We were hoping to switch to something more modern, but every time we activate it, the site layout breaks.
The preview looks great, and the layout problems don’t show up until we actually activate the new theme. Ideas?

I’m sorry for the trouble with those themes! Can you give me a link to the site you’re working on and let me know some of the themes you tried that have problems when you activate them?
It would also help if you could make a screenshot of the layout problems you see when you activate one of those themes. (You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.) That way I can see exactly what’s going on there. Thanks!

Themes can’t be uploaded to blogs hosted on WordPress.com. They can only be uploaded to self-hosted blogs running on WordPress.org software. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here:
