Themes and category thumbnails

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I would like to pick a theme that allows me to put category thumbnails on my home page. I am starting a personal/family blog and I want different categories like foster/adoption and toddler to teen, etc. I would like a thumbnail for each on my home page and a big pic for the main blog part. Is this possible? Thank you!

  • Hi there,

When I visit your site, it seems that you do not have any blog posts (and thus no categories that they would be found under) set up yet.

It is possible to use our block editor to create a grid of thumbnail images that link to other pages on your site, but to get started you will want to create at least one blog post per category you plan to represent on your homepage.

Do this first, and then it will be easier to set up the homepage grid. You may wish to consider this theme as a starting point, as it already had a grid layout on the homepage, but the truth is that you can use the block editor to create this layout with any of our themes: https://wordpress.com/theme/hever

To create a grid of thumbnails (using any theme) you can add the “Columns Block” to your page and then in each column add your image. Once the image is added you can click on the link icon to add a link to the image. You can also add any text below the image to help describe the category the thumbnail represents.

Because you are setting up a new WordPress.com site, this guide may be helpful: https://wordpress.com/learn/

It is written with beginners in mind, and covers all the essentials. Hope this helps!
