Too much white space

  • Unknown's avatar

I have way too much white space on my page, both above things and to the left and right and have no idea how to fix it. And everything is HUGE. Just the title banner takes up my entire screen at normal viewing percentages. I also don’t know how to use CSS coding very well nor do I have a purchased access – is it possible to do anything with this white space without having those things? It looks awful and I hate it.

This is what I’m getting: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YdYWMb6Bggwlg5rdgz6VbLaVrFCpetkL/view?usp=sharing
And this is more along the lines of what I want: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D9Qc3li0aU3v0EyOHvZpH23EO97bearg/view?usp=sharing

Hi there, the first screenshot of your site’s header is coming through much larger than what I see on your site on my 25″ PC monitor, which has a 125% magnification by default but no additional magnification in the browser.

Regardless, the theme you are using on your site, Hever https://wordpress.com/theme/hever does have a lot of white space and that will change depending on the device your site is being viewed on. FWIW on my PC monitor, there’s still a lot of white space to either side of the central content column on your theme. To change your theme layout, you could use CSS if you have a WPcom premium or higher upgrade on your site.

Let us know if that is relevant for you. Otherwise, let us know what features you like and we’ll try to suggest a different theme.

I did notice that the themes can change it. I didn’t really want to have to pay for premium – but even when I tried to I couldn’t.

But basically I just want a thin header (this one is way too thick and the font is too big) and then I want to be able to use the whole page for content. Like you mentioned, there’s a lot of white space to the left and right and I want to stretch the text box more so it goes further to the left (so like instead of a 3-4” margins, on like 1” or so?). Is there a better theme for that that’s included in free?

Keeping in mind that most of the new themes made for the Block Editor have a static front page https://wordpress.com/support/pages/front-page/ you should be able to arrange the layout of that homepage as you want by either editing it or creating a new page, choosing a pre-made page layout or start from scratch with blocks, and then setting that new page to be your site’s homepage. https://wordpress.com/support/page-layouts/

I’ve also flagged this thread for Staff attention and assistance.

  • Hi there,

This is for https://pmdrnikki.wordpress.com/, correct? That site now has the Exford theme.

I didn’t really want to have to pay for premium – but even when I tried to I couldn’t.

Purchases are currently blocked on your account. I see you’ve already submitted a support ticket to our billing team. They’ll reply to you via email – we’re not able to help with blocked purchases in the forums.

But basically I just want a thin header (this one is way too thick and the font is too big)

Are you referring to how it currently looks, or to how it looked on a previous theme?

Like you mentioned, there’s a lot of white space to the left and right and I want to stretch the text box more so it goes further to the left (so like instead of a 3-4” margins, on like 1” or so?).

Several blocks have a full-width option that will make then stretch the full width of the screen, but paragraph blocks don’t. This is intentional due to a principle of typographic design that a single line of text should contain between 50 and 65 characters, and not more than 70 maximum. If you make the content area wider, meaning more characters appear per line, it makes your text harder to read.

For this reason just about every well-designed website theme you’ll find on the web will have a content area that only shows up to 70 characters per line. I don’t know of any of our themes that break this rule, so I’m not able to recommend any alternative.

The only way to force your content area wider is by using custom CSS, but I don’t recommend this particular change: While you might think it looks better to not have that empty space, it actually makes it more difficult for people to consume your content, and ultimately you want to make it easy for people to read and navigate your site, so they can quickly find the information they need to be convinced to buy your service or product.
