Tracking site activity

Hello, I have a website for a campus publication, and we are trying to track website activity so that we can understand the people who we want to target when we start putting ads on the website. I tried to install Jetpack, however, the free version doesn’t give us that much information. Unfortunately, we don’t have it in our budget to pay for one of the better versions. Are there any other options?
