Traffic Stats: Why do they include my own?
-
Hi,
A question I’ve had for years of using WordPress but have never received a definitive answer.
Why do my traffic stats include my own views, and is it possible to isolate these stats and remove them?
(I know it’s me because I can look at a random post for 6 years ago and within a few minutes it’ll count as a page view!)
It’s quite frustrating to have this as a setting.
Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
WordPress will filter out any visits you make to your site, but this will only work if you are logged in to WordPress.
If you visit your site while logged out, or in a different browser (that you do not normally sign in to WordPress.com with) then your visit will be counted as you will appear to be an “anonymous visitor” to the site.
But as long as you are logged in, we can “see” that you are the admin of the site, and will not be counted. More info on stats here: https://wordpress.com/support/stats/
Hope this helps!

That’s unfortunately not true in the slightest, unless my own account is not be seeing me as an admin, which is another issue, because I’m the only user and always have been.
I’m logged in (I always am) and I don’t fuss with using multiple browsers, so neither of those track.
I checked an old post from 4 years ago just this minute, and, lo, it has counted me as a visitor.
Please recommend a fix for this.

@zeldarms does your browser have any plugins or preview-type pages that might also be registering a visit?
And, would you be willing to test this by using an incognito window with extensions turned off?
I checked an old post from 4 years ago just this minute, and, lo, it has counted me as a visitor.
Curiously, did it count your view to that page, or did it just see you as a site visitor? I wasn’t able to see any 4 year old posts in your stats for today.

No plugins except for Google Translate and Pinterest, and I’ve tried it with incognito, I’ve tried without any extensions turned on, and yet.
Just now I hit a bunch of random pages, and they’ve all counted as a single visit: me ie. Review: Black Christmas, Review: Ghostbusters, Review: The Boy. They were all me, just now, and it’s counted toward my daily traffic.
If I’m reading this all wrong, please explain, but to me it looks like it counts me as a page-view, which is absolutely what I don’t want when I’m trying to see how many people have accessed my page/posts.

Hm, so we look for the
wordpress.comcookie containing your logged in status to determine whether or not you should be tracked when visitingbigfacesmallrazor.comI wonder if your browser is treating that like a third-party cookie or cross-site tracking, thus blocking the
wordpress.comcookie onbigfacesmallrazor.comand therefore preventing us from identifying you.If you’re blocking third-party cookies, would you please temporarily accept all cookies, log out of WordPress.com then back in again, and try visiting your site?
And/or, if you’re blocking cross-site tracking, would you please temporarily switch that off, log out of WordPress.com then back in again, and try visiting your site?

Okay, I think it has worked with what you suggested. I accepted all cookies and turned off cross-site tracking. I don’t know exactly what either of these means but it doesn’t seem to have logged myself as a visitor, which is what I’ve wanted for all of these years, so thank you again. Is there any risk to having unblocked third-party cookies, or unblocking cross-site tracking just so I know what to look for if there are any issues?

It sounds like it was set up to block tracking cookies (used most often with ads).
If your browser will let you, you might consider just creating an exception for this site and WordPres.com.

As much as I thought it had worked, it hadn’t. Each day it seems to have the same problem where I count as visitor. 35 homepage views today, all me.

I’ve also noticed this on my recently published blog. I’m trying these suggestions and hopefully it works, even though I never sign out of wordpress.

Excuse me for butting in, but, I thought that when a blog is private, as Zeldarm’s is, then your own views are always counted. Isn’t that the case? Or am I wrong?

@jkund17, if you continue to have trouble with that, could you start a new topic here?
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.
That way the people who have been working on this topic won’t get unwanted notifications as we troubleshoot your issue. Thanks!
