  I have wix and was wanting to create a website with WordPress. Can I keep my domain with other company and change over to WordPress. How long does it take? Can I create my website first ?

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  That is not an issue – what you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com or a .home.blog subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use that as the domain as you build the site and determine whether or not this is the platform you want to use. The site starts off private until you are ready to launch it.

  Once you are done developing the site, you can make the decision to transfer the domain over:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

  Or, if you want to keep the domain where it is current hosting, you can connect the domain fro there:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/connect-existing-domain/
