My wife purchased a domain name from WordPress.com and I don’t want to pay $100 for them to host it. How can I transfer the domain name to another hosting service?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All hosting here at WordPress.com is free of charge.

Re: Purchasing a domain name and domain mapping upgrade
Registering a domain through WordPress.com and mapping that domain to your blog costs $17.00 per domain, per year. For $8.00 more, you can also make the domain registration private. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

    Re: changing registrars

Note: You may not transfer a domain name for 60 days after its purchase or for 60 days after you change any registrant contact information. This is a rule set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and standard across all registrars. You can still transfer if you update nameservers or the admin email address.

You should only transfer a domain if you want to completely move the ownership of the domain from WordPress.com to another registrar. Note that you can often just update the nameservers instead if you don’t want to do a full transfer.

A domain with a private registration cannot be transferred. If you wish to transfer a privately registered domain, you will first need to unsubscribe the private registration. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar

    @comficosi
Will you please provide an active link to the .wordpress.com root blog starting with http:// ?
Will you also provide the same for the domain in question?

Domain name transfers cannot be made for 60 days. That is an ICANN rule, but you do not need to transfer the domain name, just point it at whatever web host you choose.

Do be aware that it is typically going to cost you $100 a year or more to have a self-hosted site at somewhere like dreamhost, bluehost, etc., and you will be responsible for all installations, all upgrades, all backups and all troubleshooting. If something goes wrong, you have to figure it out and fix it.

Also, that $100 is not just the domain name and domain mapping, it includes:

    Domain Name & Mapping
    5GB Space Upgrade
    No Ads
Custom Design (custom fonts and CSS editing)
    VideoPress

The above bought separately would be $140

To point the domain at the new webhost, see this support document.

Refunds: On upgrades that contain a domain name registration, there is only a 48 hour window to get a refund. If you do this, note that it might be 60 days before the domain name is released by the registrar for use and there is always the chance someone will grab it before you can get it.

Just a few things to think about.
