Transfer of my chosen domaine name – help please?

Hi there, I signed up with WordPress recently, only to realise almost immediately that I was in over my head. It seems like a great platform for those already fairly confident with web building. Anyway-I am about to sign up with Squarespace and want to take my .blog domain name with me. I think to simply delete my unused WordPress account would not do the trick? Is it really still 30+ days before transfers can complete? Any helpful thoughts around this would be most welcome. Many thanks and merry Christmas.

So, first off, you do not want to delete the domain. Doing so will, at best, delay your ability to register and use it for a few weeks. And at worst, a domain squatter else will snatch up the domain and register it before you are able to. Causing you to lose control of it.
The best way to use a WordPress.com registered domain with another webhost is to follow these instructions:

Thank you so much for your advice, I really appreciate that. One other point I forgot to mention-when I requested the refund for the transaction from WordPress, I also had the cost of the domain itself, refunded. I am now guessing that this might have been unwise. I am getting a message at the moment saying, “this domain is parked with Automatic” – so am I right in thinking that as soon as the refund goes through-the domain will become available once again? I understand what you mean about ‘domain squatters’ – I guess I will just have to cross my fingers that it doesn’t get nicked! Any further thoughts would be appreciated, but regardless – thank you so much for your time and advice already offered. -

No, that is not correct. As an anti fraud measure, registrars will hold onto canceled domains for a few weeks. It can be some time before you are able to register it again.
I can try and reverse the cancellation if you like.
If successful, you will need to re-purchase the yearly domain registration. Then you will be able to point your domain to a new webhost using the instructions I posted earlier. Otherwise, you can wait for the domain to become available again.

Thank you for your reply. I wonder if the attempt to reverse the cancellation would be successful…I know that might be impossible to say for sure. I made the transaction on December 6th. I suppose there is no harm in trying?
Yes okay, please could you kindly attempt to reverse the cancellation. Perhaps in future, it might be an idea for staff to notify customers in a similar position, that if they wish to re-use the domain name – they might want to keep this in mind before authorising complete refund/cancellation requests? It is quite complicated, all this. Maybe I am exceptional and most people know all this stuff. But WordPress does not seem to have a way for customers to try out the platform, before making a commitment..? Or maybe there is a way-but if so, I didn’t know about it. Anyway I appreciate the fact that I got a refund without any hassle.
I guess I will wait and see if the cancellation is successful.

There is no cost to start a WordPress.com site. That gives people the opportunity to try out the platform and see if the functionality will work for them.

So, I have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that I cannot recover the domain for you. However, the good news is that it was released quite quickly from the registrar and should be available to register at get.blog, WordPress.com, or other registrars very shortly.
