Transfering my domain name from my wordpress site to squarespace

    Hi wordpress!

    I am currently trying to bring my domain over from WordPress to Squarespace.

    I can not seem to edit my Domain Settings for islabell.com, therefore I can not input the “A” or “CNAME” as an error message pops up that says “This record cannot be added, as it conflicts with an existing WordPress.com record”.

    I would like to transfer it over please.

    My A record should point to 98.185.159.135.
    and my CNAME ext.squarespace.com.

    I can send you screen shots if it helps.

    I would also like to make sure that I can renew the domain separate from you guys.

    Hi Isla,

    I went ahead and entered the two DNS records you mentioned, to point your domain islabell.com to Squarespace. Please note it can take up to 72 hours for domain changes like that to take effect everywhere.

    You can edit those domains records if you need under Store > My Domains in your blog’s dashboard here at WordPress.com. We have more details about that here: Setting Custom A Records

    However, this doesn’t completely transfer the domain to Squarespace. If you’d like to transfer the domain to a new domain registrar (so you can renew it separately from WordPress.com) you can follow this guide: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    For now, since it’s still registered here at WordPress.com, you will need to renew it here. If you transfer it to a new registrar, you can renew it with the new registrar. (That is different from keeping it registered here and pointing it to a new host like Squarespace by changing the A and CNAME records.)

    Thank you so much Rachel!

    I would love to have my domain completely transfered over to squarespace so I can renew with them.

    I am a little nervous about time though as I need to renew it by August 14th and it seems the process will take around 5 days.

    How would you suggest I proceed. Should I renew the domain with you guys and then transfer it over? How much would this cost as I will not need any additional services from you guys other than securing the domain name.

    I really appreciate your help.

    Hi Isla,

    Your domain is actually registered through September 18, 2014, so you have some time to do the transfer. (Many domain registrars will also renew the domain for you when you transfer it to them, so you may be able to renew it as part of that transfer process.)

    However, it looks like Squarespace doesn’t accept incoming domain transfers:

    That means you’ll need to keep the domain registered here at WordPress.com or transfer it to a separate domain registrar. (You can see a list of other popular registrars on that Squarespace help page.)
