transferring a domain name

Hello, I just want to check something. I have just cancelled a Hostclear account that was on trail as my ‘web guy’ recommended we use wordpress and I am completely new to all things web (should have talked to him first). Hostclear have said that they hold the domain name registration for 60 days – can’t get out of it. If we set up a free wordpress page on the wordpress.com name can I after 60 days is up buy the old domain name again once it is re-released through WP and assign any work we’ve already done on the free wordpress site to it? Didn’t want to have to upgrade to Premium which it says you have to do to transfer another host domain as have been told I don’t need a fancy site (yet!). Thanks, H

If it is a newly registered domain, all registrars are required to hold domains for 60 days from the date of registration before they can be transferred to a new registrar. We have to do this as well with WordPress.com registered domains.

Most domain registrars/webhosts will give you the option to point your domain at a different webhost by changing the nameservers. For example, here are our instructions for pointing a WordPress.com domain to another webhost:

On our end, yes. Though domain registrars have different rules about what they do with canceled domains. You should check with your registrar to make sure that they will release the domain into the pool of available domains.
