transferring a domain to another user

    Hi – our community group used to have a website, hosted by WordPress, which has been taken down. the person who put it up claims that he cannot transfer the domain to our account as ‘the domain is owned by WordPress. Only they can give it to you.’ Is that true? Can you please help us. Thanks!

    Hi there,

    To clarify, domains are owned by the individual that purchase it (this is regulated by law) and is not something that is under our control. With that said we’re happy to take a closer look. What is the URL of the site you are needing help with?

    That’s what I thought – that domains are owned by the individual that purchase it.

    Hi there,

    It looks like they canceled that domain a few weeks ago. This means that it’ll take up to 90 days for the domain to be released. Then you’ll be able to register it unless someone else does that before you do.

    What I recommend, is contacting them and asking them to reach out to us so that we can restore the domain. Once that’s done, they can transfer it over to you.
