Transferring a domain to wordpress?

    Hi,

    I’m trying to get clarification on the process for transferring a domain I already own to WordPress.

    Am I right in understanding that it is not possible to transfer an .org.uk domain to WordPress? That’s what this link seems to suggest to me:

    I do not have any DNS control of the domain at the current host/registrar so does that mean I need to transfer the domain somewhere else that does provide DNS control and then map the domain if I want to host it at WordPress?

    Hi there,

    You are right. You can only map a .co.uk on WordPress.com at the moment. However, it strikes me as odd that your registrar isn’t offering any control over a domain’s name servers. Can you please let me know who is your registrar so I can have a look?

    The domain I want to host at WordPress.com is actually an org.uk domain, but I’m assuming that is the same as a co.uk domain for this purpose and still cannot be transferred directly to wordpress?

    Having checked with my current provider they can provide DNS control, but not on my current hosting plan. So if I convert to a different plan which gives me access to the name servers configuration for the domain I should then be able to map this to a wordpress.com account?

    It’s more accurate to say we don’t support transfers of .uk domains, be they .co.uk, .org.uk, or any other version. They’re all controlled by the Nominet registry that “owns” the .uk TLD, and they have some unique transfer requirements for those domains which we cannot currently support.

    If you want to use the domain with your WordPress.com site, you should not need a hosting plan somewhere else at all, as we’ll be your host.

    Please make it clear to your domain provider that you don’t want hosting, you simply want to point your domain to your actual host. If they’re adamant that you cannot do this by changing the name servers, an alternative is to add A records instead. You will need to add two A-records with these IPs:

    192.0.78.24

    192.0.78.25

    We recommend name servers, but either option will point the domain to our servers, and once you add a mapping upgrade on our end the domain will then show your WordPress.com site.

    I have to say I find it very unusual that your domain provider won’t allow you to manage your own domain’s DNS. If they require you to pay extra for access to such a basic domain management function, you might want to consider transferring the domain to another registrar, but I’ll leave that up to you. (I’m not able to offer any recommendations regarding registrars for .uk domains :) )
