Transferring content from self-hosted blog to a free wordpress.com blog

  Hi there!

  Once I export my posts from my wordpress.org (self-hosted) blog and import them to a new free wordpress.com blog, can I safely close my account on my Host for good without losing any content? I mean, once my XML file is imported, will I have a copy of everything (photos and text) hosted in my new (free) wordpress.com blog?
  Sorry if this is a silly/obvious question, but I don’t want to take chances, it would be very sad losing my family diary of years and years.
