Transferring my domain away from my current registrar or not?

I am not sure if it is better to keep my domain with my current registrar or not. Will the yearly cost for the domain increase with wordpress?

Hi @anitakroess6817, I can’t promise pricing for domains would stay the same indefinitely, but I’m unaware of any price increases ahead. If they did, you could always transfer the domain to a registrar of your choice again and just map it here with us.
The only big price increase is that you get another year added to your domain for free with a plan purchase, whereas next year you’d pay for the plan as well as the domain renewal. But you can factor that free year into your math for your decision. Let us know if you need more help or have other questions. Cheers!

I have another question: if I start with the business plan and in a few months decide to change to the premium or personal plan, how does that work? What are the guidelines around this? I was unable to find anything about this in the help section.

If you start with Business you’re welcome to downgrade to another plan, but should you do that we don’t issue any pro-rated refunds for the difference in cost. So generally we recommend that people only downgrade once the current plan approaches its expiration date.
Downgrades can only be done by staff, so please start a live chat with us should you want to do that.
If you start on a cheaper plan, say Personal, and then decide you want to upgrade to Premium in a few months, in that case you’ll receive an automatic pro-rated discount on the more expensive plan.

If I sign up for business or for any other plan now, do I need to pay the 12 months in advance?Also, signing up for business and using certain plugins – what happens when downgrading? Do they “fall away” or are there some who are free on business plan and I would then need to pay say for example for the personal plan if I wanted to keep using them?

Yes, all plans and other upgrades can only be paid a year in advance. There’s no monthly payment option.

The only plan that allows the installation of plugins is the Business plan, therefore when you downgrade, those plugins will be removed. However, all the other plans (including the Free one) come with the most popular plugin functionality already built-in. You can read more about that here:
