Travel map
-
I am currently testing out wordpress to see if its suitable for the kind of blogging I am looking to do.
One thing I am really looking for is the ability to add some kind of ‘dynamic map’ like the kind used on http://www.travelpod.com, where with each post it updates your location on a map (adds a new pin and line on the map), which puts the date of when you were there, and links to your posts in that area. Is there anything of this kind that exists on wordpress.com? I have used travelpod in the past as it is very simple, but wordpress seems more suited to making the blog a bit neater, and also stands alone rather than just another page on the travelpod website. However this map feature was incredibly useful for travel blogging.
Searching on the forums I can currently find info about ‘platial’, however this apparently no longer exists. There is the possibility of using a google maps ‘my maps’, but my question is to see if there is something more simple as part of wordpress that I could use, or if anyone has any examples of good ones they have seen on wordpress blogs?
I’d be very grateful for any suggestions.
Finally, Is there any feature/widget being developed for wordpress that might do this in the future? I’m sure it would be in high demand!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
Did you search the support documentation for “Google maps”? ;) I found this –> http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/ -
There is nothing more simple that is a part of wordpress.com software and features — sorry. :(

Yes, I have looked at the my maps thing on google maps, looks fine, but not quite as ‘interactive’ as I was hoping for.
Seems odd that this wouldn’t be a feature, travel bloggers must be looking for something to map their trip on whilst using WordPress.
Looking around I’ve seen a site called Triptracker. If that is compatible it might be the right kind of thing to use, need to investigate a bit more. Anyone had any experiences with this? Or any others?

The problem stems from the fact that all of those use dynamic codes (Javascript) and that we are on a multiuser blogging platform. As our blogs are not free-standing but share a common skeletal architecture maintaining security is a big deal. Therefore there are restricted codes that the software will strip out. See here –> http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
If you move to a wordpress.ORG install this problem will disappear as the only security threat ill be to your own site. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

That would work, however for travel blogging that is impractical due to the software required, installing it at each internet cafe you visit would be pretty time consuming! (and I wouldn’t be bringing my own laptop)
The search continues…

WordPress.ORG does not require any software on your PC to be used – it works so much like WordPress.COM (here) that many can’t tell the difference.
You could log into a WordPress.ORG from an internet cafe if you wanted – a year ago I visited relatives and worked on my .ORG site using their computer and I did not need to put any software on their computer.
The downside is you must do your own site admin stuff (or hire someone to help) – things like software updates etc.
