tried to set up verizon hotspot by typing in my.jetpack and was directed to wordpress site appearing to be required for access to the Verizon hotspot set-up.

The Jetpack you wound up at is https://jetpack.com/ which is a plugin for sites that run off of the https://wordpress.org/ software.
It has absolutely not relationship with Verizon Wireless or their Jetpack Mifi devices.
