Trying a new theme with my existing blog, prismperspectives.wordpress.com

I would like to find a new theme. I have found two I’m interested in, but when I try them out, they populate with my existing content, which is not in the theme’s format.

How can I try out a theme without it capturing my existing content, which isn’t in the right format? I need it to be a template that I can fill in with my content.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Aside from starting a new “test” blog or looking at the demo version of the theme, I cannot think of a way to preview a theme that uses content that is set up for a different format. You could set up a few private test pages on your site that were int he correct format and then view those with the new theme maybe?

I don’t know how to set up the right format without the template being there. My current format is totally different.

How do I set up a new “test” blog?

  • Log into WordPress.com and click on “my blogs” up at the top. Then on the upper left of the page you are sent to, you should see a “create another blog” button. Click it and follow the instructions.

I just tried this. I set up a home page, then clicked to preview the theme. It didn’t come up similar to the template and I was unable to edit it. I trashed the new homepage.

I cannot be the only person with this problem. Can someone help me?

  • There really is no way to do this other automatically. For example, say that you wanted to use a site with a “slider” at the top. But none of your existing posts have “featured images” (something that is required for the slider to work). There is no way to automatically assign featured images, even generic sample ones, to your existing posts so that you could preview it. You end up with 4 options:

    1. Look at the demo site linked from the theme page.
    2. Look at any sample sites linked from the theme page.
    3. Set up a test site with data and posts that match the format required for the theme you want to preview.
    4. Buy the theme, try it out, and request a refund if it doesn’t work the way you want.

I understand your frustration. But there isn’t any way for us to create data that doesn’t exist already in your blog.

    Does that make sense?

I appreciate your efforts to help; I can see I don’t have the technical background required to be able to use the themes effectively.

I thought they would perform as template pages, already programmed and ready to use.

    Thanks, though.

  • Happy to help. Sorry that I couldn’t do more.

    Happy holidays.
