Two accounts linked to the same email

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I was recently connected to the site http://www.rotostreetjournal.com. The admin emailed me a link to get an account started. I had forgotten that I previously had a WordPress account that I wasn’t using, and when I go to sign in normally through the WordPress web site, it will only recognize the old account’s info. I would like to close the old account, but, I don’t want to risk not being able to use my new account for 30 days, since they’re both on the same email address, and WordPress says that if I close an account, I can’t use that same email address for 30 days. Would you be able to close my old account (@johnlukepicard, not connected to any sites) without it negatively affecting my new one ([redacted by staff], connected to rotostreetjournal.com)?

    Thank you for your consideration,
    [redacted by staff]

I’m sorry, would a moderator be able to delete this post? I’d still like to have the issue resolved but the post is a little more particular than I’d like it to be, and I didn’t catch that it was going to be publicly posted until just as I was hitting “submit”.

  • Hi there,

Having two WordPress.com accounts with the same email is not possible. So I don’t think you have two WordPress.com accounts.

First, http://www.rotostreetjournal.com is not a WordPress.com site. That site is built using the open source WordPress.org software at another host. You have that site connected to your johnlukepicard account with us via the Jetpack plugin – that plugin allows you to manage the site via your WordPress.com account, and gives you access to some WordPress.com features.

The email the site admin sent you is for your user account on the site itself. That account exists only on that site, and has no connection to your WordPress.com username account. As such, that admin account could be using the same email address as your WordPress.com account.

Deleting your johnlukepicard account on WordPress.com won’t have any effect on your admin account for the site, but it will mean you won’t be able to use any of Jetpack’s features on the site.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

We don’t delete forum threads unless it’s a security issue, but I’ve removed the names you posted in your first comment above.

Thank you, I saw that I overlooked where to link rotostreetjournal to my existing picard account, and that looks to have cleared up my login issue. I figure that the problems I run into are ultimately going to be due to my inexperience. Right now my issue is uploading photos. I don’t have the media buttons that other site editors do and I haven’t figured out why that is yet, and when I drop-and-drag photos, the media library comes up, but says “Sorry, you are not allowed to upload these files.” I’m trying out using AndFTP to see if that helps, but I’m also new to using FTP.

If this using the post editor in WP-Admin, or the editor at My Site ->Site ->Posts here on WordPress.com?

The ability to upload media is tied to your user role on the site – you need to be an Author or higher to do that. If you’re a contributor you won’t have that option. Please contact the admin on the site who added you to check that for you – we don’t have control over user accounts on the site as it’s not hosted with us.

For help with FTP, if you have access to that, you’ll need to contact the hosting provider directly.
