unable to create subdomain for a members page

I am making a site for my HOA. I have a public site e.g. myhoa.wordpress.com. I am trying to create a subdomain for a members only site. I named the subdomain members.myhoa.wordpress.com. I keep getting a Sorry note that it unable to create the domain. What am I doing wrong?

Hi there,
You cannot create a subdomain on a free WordPress.com address, as that address is itself already a subdomain of the WordPress.com domain.
If you want to use a subdomain for a site, you’ll need to first own a custom domain, like myhoa.com, and then you can map a subdomain on that domain instead.
Please note that both adding a custom domain to a WordPress.com, or mapping a subdomain to a WordPress.com site, requires one of our paid plans.
