Unable to specify custom Host when adding CNAME & TXT records

  • Unknown's avatar

First off, this is not the first time I’ve done this procedure, however it is the first time I’ve tried doing this with a WordPress hosted domain. But, basically, I’m trying to set up Proton Mail for the domain myamericanvoice.blog so I can send/receive emails through the Proton Mail service using said domain. I was able to add all the necessary DNS records to accomplish this, EXCEPT FOR the DKIM CNAME records and DMARC TXT records as they require specific custom hosts to be set. And WordPress will only allow me to set the host of any DNS record to myamericanvoice.blog or *.myamericanvoice.blog, whereas I need to be able to set the host to something like protonmail._domainkey or _dmarc.

I’ve set this up enough to send/receive basic emails, but to employ the full benefits of Proton Mail, I MUST be able to add these DKIM & DMARC DNS records. I am happy to provide these records to the appropriate party to be added by someone other than myself. However, due to security concerns, I cannot post them publicly.

Am I SOL, or can someone add these four DNS records to this domain? If you can, please get in touch with me. Thanks in advance!

    Hey there!

You can absolutely add a custom host for your TXT and CNAME records.

To manage your DNS records, go to Upgrades > Domains. Click on the domain you want to manage, then click on DNS records, then Manage.

Next, click on the Add a record button in the upper right corner. Click on the Type dropdown to select the type of DNS record you wish to add (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, or SRV.)

Enter the subdomain prefix (protonmail._domainkey or _dmarc) in the Name (Host) field if it is a CNAME record, or in the Name (optional) field if it is a TXT record.

For more information on adding a DNS record, refer to this support document.

Thanks for the reply, but it sounds like I wasn’t clear enough in my initial post. What you’re suggesting adds a subdomain for my domain name as host. I don’t need and am not trying to add a subdomain for my domain as host, or a subdomain at all. I’m trying to add a completely different 3rd-party domain as host that is unaffiliated with my domain name, without “mydomain.com” being added as a suffix.

    Examples for clarification…
Your suggestion, the way WP DNS is set up, would incorrectly set the hosts to:
    protonmail._domainkey.mydomain.com
    _dmarc.mydomain.com

What I actually need the hosts to be is:
    protonmail._domainkey
    _dmarc

I know it can be done with WordPress as I’ve seen it done in other threads, but only manually by WP staff. If someone with the capability of making these changes would contact me, I can provide them with the complete DNS records to be added.

    Thank you!

    Hi again!

    – protonmail._domainkey.mydomain.com
    – _dmarc.mydomain.com

What I actually need the hosts to be is:
    – protonmail._domainkey
    – _dmarc

When you see a CNAME record listed as “_dmarc“, that is shorthand for “_dmarc.mydomain.com

It is standard to set your DMARC policy with a TXT record at “_dmarc.mydomain.com

It wouldn’t be possible to set a record at “_dmarc“, since this is not a URL or location accessible on the Internet.

I would suggest setting up the records in that way, but feel free to reach out to Proton Mail for clarification if you’re unsure.
