Uncertain if I will lose what I've started if I upgrade. Need clarity.

I am just starting. I realized in this process, that I may want to upgrade before going any further. Will the format of my theme remain the same? Will I have to start over and will I lose what I’ve done already?

I haven’t published anything really yet. I am still getting set up. I want to get a host and I haven’t figured out which upgrade to go to for my needs. It’s all a mystery still. BUT I have finally figured out how to do certain things and I don’t want to have to start all over and I need clarity on direction. For example, right now I am in the basic free blog. There are no pluggins and there are no custom templates from what I can see. BUT I could be wrong. Thank you for your help.

Well, it depends what upgrades you want. My general advice is to start small.
There is NO upgrade here that allows custom themes or plugins. Those are for WordPress.ORG blogs, not WordPress.COM blogs.

Well I haven’t picked a host yet. I was going to get a.com instead of WordPress.com. Is .ORG one of the WordPress upgrades? I don’t even remember seeing that. I do know the basic doesn’t store videos. I would like to have support if I need it. And the basic free one is a maybe for that. I get confused because the web host that I have looked at seem to be similar in what WordPress can offer too. So, where do I find the WordPress.org upgrade? And in that would I lose what I’ve started? I basically have all the menu set up with all the links. I have some photos and some text but nothing that I can’t easily copy and paste. Its mostly set up that I invested some time in.
There’s nothing lime a crash course in technology. :)

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
This is not a matter of purchasing any upgrade. If you require FTP access, the ability to upload third party theme, advertising etc. then you have to hire a web host, set up your self hosted WordPress.org install and move your content into it.
