Update PHP

    Dear Hosting Provider,

    I would like to verify if my hosting account is running
    PHP 7.4 or newer, and if I’m also running the latest version of WordPress. If I am not already on the latest version of PHP or WP, please let me know what steps I need to take to update.

    Hi there,

    We can’t help directly because we don’t host your site on our WordPress.com managed hosting. As a result, we can’t take a closer look at your site.

    Instead your host (Stablehost) uses the open-source variant of the WordPress platform (sometimes called “WordPress.org”) which functions differently than what we offer here on WordPress.com.

    However, your host is in direct control of what PHP version you are using, as well as what other resources are dedicated to your account. They will be able to confirm this detail with you, and possibly update PHP on your account if they are able (depending on how their service is set up.)

    If I am not already on the latest version of PHP or WP, please let me know what steps I need to take to update.

    I should clarify that for sites on WordPress.com, we are a managed host so we automatically update the WordPress software to the current version number for security purposes. We do not have a procedure for site owners to manually upgrade on their end since it’s not needed.

    The version of WordPress your host uses (the free open-source DIY version) is a bit different in that you need to maintain those things yourself since you are not on a managed host such as we have here.

    The good news is that you can find help on updating WordPress here in the wordpress.org forums, which is the support contact for sites using the self-hosted version of the platform that is in use on Stablehost. https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/
