I’m perfectly reading a document, thank you., and I’m already clear on how the drag tool is supposed to work, at least as far as how to access. I have tried to select the box, successfully if the appearance of the toolbar is any indication. I have clicked on the dots and seen the hand appear. However, when I move the hand off of the toolbar, it turns back into the cursor and does not grab the block. The arrow tools are not helpful, because I want to move the block horizontally. I want to have 3 blocks horizontally across the page, as was the case originally, but I want my posts block (at the bottom) to remain centered as it is.

  • Unknown's avatar

In other words, I want 3 columns under the heading Featured Works (each topped by a picture) on the top half of the page, and one centered column under My Works on the bottom half of the page.

  • Ah ok, that’s the problem. The blocks only move vertically there.

If you want to build horizontally, you’ll need to create and configure a Columns Block and drag them inside of that: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/columns-block/

If I add a column block, is it going to affect the orientation of the blocks below it? Can I turn existing blocks into column blocks or should I cut and paste the images and text from the old non-column blocks into the column?

Ok, I’ve added the columns block, and this is not what I had in mind at all. The content is still centered in the middle of the page, occupying about 1/3 of the total page. I want the upper portion of the page to have content distributed across the entire width of the page. I’m fairly certain that’s how the template looked when I started, but perhaps that was before I changed the template. Do I need to change the template again? What happens to the existing content if I change the template? Am I not being clear?

  • Hi there,

No it will not affect blocks below it, it will instead be inserted above them when you add the columns block in the editor.

There is not a way to turn the existing blocks into a column block however. Instead you can add the columns block, and then drag and drop your images. You can also copy/paste existing blocks into an empty column and they should be added correctly.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I’ve added the columns block, and this is not what I had in mind at all. When I originally said I wanted 3 columns, I see now that I should have said 3 blocks, and specified that I wanted them distributed horizontally across the page. With the columns, the content is still centered in the middle of the page, occupying about 1/3 of the total page. I want the upper portion of the page to have content distributed across the entire width of the page. I’m fairly certain that’s how the template looked when I started, but perhaps that was before I changed the template. Do I need to change the template again?

  • There is a setting for the column block that controls it’s width. By default it is narrow, but can be made to be full page width if your theme supports it.

I recorded a video that shows:
    – setting up the columns block
    – dragging image and paragraph blocks into the columns
    – setting the width of the column block to show “wide” and “full width” options.

    Video at this link: https://d.pr/v/8sfASQ

    Hope this helps!

I’m not sure why I was advised to change my home page to a static page in order to publish the edited version of my homepage. A static page seems to limit the number of blog posts that appear on the home page to just three. Since I only have the one page, I’m not sure if the other blog posts still exist. If they do, I don’t know where or how to access them. I would like all the blog posts to be visible on the home page. Again, I’m not sure why I was told it was necessary to switch to a static page or what the limits of that are. Can I not have the “feed of latest blog posts” and the other blocks that I want on the home page?

  • A static page seems to limit the number of blog posts that appear on the home page to just three.

Depending on which block you used to display the posts, you can control the amount in the block’s settings:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/latest-posts-block/#block-settings
    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/#block-settings

Since I only have the one page, I’m not sure if the other blog posts still exist. If they do, I don’t know where or how to access them.

With the static home page, we recommend also setting a blog page, so your posts can be browsed separately if your visitors want to: https://wordpress.com/support/pages/front-page/#step-3-create-a-blog-page-optional

I’m not sure why I was told it was necessary to switch to a static page or what the limits of that are.

A static front page gives you many more options to control how it appears.

The blog page, which is the default front page, is simply a list of posts which cannot be customized.

A static front page can be fully customized, like using columns to refine the layout.

    Thank you!

Now I want to adjust the size of the lettering within a text block relative to the block itself: make the text bigger so that there is less whitespace (actually orange) around it.

If possible, I would also like to create a logo in which the color of the font alternates, with the odd-numbered letters being one color and the even-numbered letters being a second color. Is that possible? Would I have to create a separate text block for each individual letter?

Changing the size of the text isn’t going to reduce the spacing between the text and the edges of the block – that whitespace is programmed into the way the block and theme is designed to work.

To remove that whitespace, you’d need to override the block’s styling, using custom CSS code. Adding custom CSS code to customize your site is possible on our Premium Plan:

To add a logo you need an image file. So you’ll want to use image editing software on your computer to create a logo, and upload that image to your media library so you can set it as the site logo in the Customizer.

Depending on what exactly you want to create, something as simple as Windows Paint might be enough, but as creating your logo is not something that happens here on WordPress.com, we’re not able to help with that part of the process :)

You can also create a logo for your site using the Create Logo button in the Customizer. You can find out more information on that feature here:

Perhaps I should not have used the word logo, since what I want to do only involves font color. I would also like to create a headline in which the color of the font alternates, with the odd-numbered letters being one color and the even-numbered letters being a second color. Is that possible? Would I have to create a separate text block for each individual letter?

  • That would not be directly possible, even via CSS.

The best option for that would be to have a logo created matching the look you need.

    Hi
Just want to give credit to jerrysarcastic for this: https://d.pr/v/8sfASQ

which I think will help a lot of people, certainly me.
Very clear, exact tutorial. Should be posted somewhere so it could be
possible to find again at a later time.

    Thanks!

You can favorite this thread in the sidebar and you’ll find it again under “Favorites” in your forum profile. You can also download that video on droplr and keep it in a safe place.

And now I know the disadvantage of setting “Top Toolbar” each time. 😞
