Updating website

I signed on to update an existing website for a non-profit organization. When I logged into the site dashboard, there is no way to backup, update theme or WP version. It is currently WP 4.9.4 running Twenty Fourteen theme. What is the easiest way to update the WP version so that I can access tools, plugins, etc? My skills are medium, I have done several WP websites/blogs but not run into something like this. Being a non-profit, getting FTP credentials may be challenging so if I can update the existing version I should be able to make the other necessary changes.
