Upgrade from ".wordpress.com" to ".com"?

  If I start a “.wordpress.com” account for free, will I later be able to upgrade to a “.com” address without changing the rest of the URL?

  Possibly. It all depends on whether or not both the domain name and the underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain URL you want is available or not.

  Depends what you mean by “upgrade”. You can go from whatever.wordpress.com to whatever.com with the Domain Mapping upgrade: you buy a custom domain and the mapping of that to your blog for a year. Note it doesn’t change the Terms of service, your ability to put ads on your blog, or the kinds of code you can use.
