upgrade vs domain registration

    Distinguish the difference between an upgraded plan (which includes a custom domain) and registering a new domain. I am curious because of the difference in refund policies for both.

    Hi there,

    The biggest difference is that you can’t just register a domain. You need a paid plan to use a domain with a WordPress.com site.

    If you register a domain only without a site via WordPress.com/domains, you’ll be able to use the domain somewhere else, but to use the domain with a WordPress.com site you’ll still need to purchase a plan. Domains can be refunded for up to 48 hours.

    The refund period on plans are 30 days. However, if you use the free domain in the plan to register a new custom domain, the domain is only refundable for 48 hours. If you cancel the plan more than 48 hours after adding the domain, the domain will not be cancelled and you’ll only receive a partial refund for the plan.
