I have a free WordPress account. If I upgrade to Premium with a domain name, will my subscribers still get notice of my new posts?

Yes. Domain mapping creates a seamless redirect from the original URLs to the new domain URLs.

That’s a bit to absorb, but thanks I’ll give it a look.
Two more related questions:
The note about not being able to upload plugins and themes. I’m not really familiar with this, and it’s not an eCommerce endeavor, but does that mean I can’t use custom menus/drop-downs/etc as part of the site design?
And second: I have an existing domain. http://www.ricbret.com. I’ve been thinking about connecting the blog via a subdomain: http://blog.ricbret.com to link in the existing (or upgraded to premium) http://ricbret.wordpress.com blog.
So with that additional strategy, the same question: can that be done while maintaining the current subscribers? Would I need to register a target domain for the premium WordPress site, and if so would I have access to the IP address for that domain?

The short form is, a custom domain is like building another door to your house, a door that opens on a different street and thus has a different address. You can still get to the house from the old door, and the house itself isn’t changed.
You can use custom menus. On some themes and for some functions you can use drop down menus. Whether you can do “etc” depends on what “etc” specifically means.
Changing a domain name does not kick the original subscribers off, whether a regular domain or a subdomain.
