Upgrading and transferring domain?

    I want to transfer a domain name from the current registrar to wordpress.com and upgrade to ecommerce wordpress plan. The site is currently with a registrar and self hosted with that registrar. The registrar has provided me with an authorization code for the transfer but I am finding documentation on wordpress that tells me that in order to transfer domain to wp, I need to have a business plan. I’m unable to upgrade to a business plan (or ecommerce plan) because it is currently hosted with this registrar. I’m at a road block. How do I get around this and get this domain transferred to wp hosting + upgraded to ecommerce plan? The documentation at wp is extensive but I am not finding exactly what steps I need to take first. Can someone help walk me through the steps.

    Hi Bonnie,

    You need to have an active plan to be able to transfer your domain on WordPress.com. You can purchase the eCommerce plan by visiting the following link:

    https://wordpress.com/plans/?customerType=business

    and then transfer your domain by following these steps:

    Thank you for the quick response.

    The first link you sent, directed me to Jetpack, where I may choose ‘free’ jetpack or one of the paid options for a monthly fee. I chose the free version for now.

    But wonder….

    Is this the ‘required’ paid plan option that I need to satisfy in order to transfer the domain?

    I had thought that I needed paid wordpress account: Blogger, Personal, Premium, Business, or Ecommerce.

    The wp ecommerce package looks like it has everything we need. Is Jetpack paid package a requirement is some way? May I use free jetpack and paid ecommerce package?

    I am still unable to find the path I need to upgrade to ecommerce for my domain. The ‘sign up’ link on the page assumes that I do not yet have a domain, no option to select existing domain, only options to create new site. How do I update plan for existing site. Even in dashboard I am only seeing jetpack options to upgrade, not wp plans with ecommerce option.

    Hi Bonnie –

    Let’s try this.

    1. Add the plan to your account from https://wordpress.com/plans/
    2. Next, click on My Sites – Domains – Add New and connect the domain

    If that doesn’t work we can add the plan from our side and send you an email with a payment link. But I want to make sure we aren’t dealing with another issue that might need investigated before jumping to that.
