Upgrading from a free plan to a premium plan
-
Hello,
I currently have an old WordPress site (free plan) that I have made private as I don’t want it visible anymore. I would like to create a new blog on a premium plan with a custom domain. When I click upgrade and choose the premium plan, it doesn’t give me a chance to change the domain name to the custom one before I pay – it says the following:
WordPress.com Premium – annual subscription
downhillcheri.wordpress.com
96 USD
(8 USD x 12 months). If I upgrade to the premium plan, will I be able to change my domain name thereafter? I really don’t want it to be the domain name mentioned above. I thought about deleting the blog entirely and starting fresh but WordPress says if I delete it, I won’t be able to open a new account on the same email address for 30 days – I can’t wait that long.
Please help! Thank you.

Hi there,
You can add a custom domain after you add the plan, yes. You can also go to My Site ->Domains ->Add first, which will automatically add the Premium Plan as well and register the domain at the same time as you add the plan.

You appear to be conflating deleting a site with deleting an account. You can create as many sites in your account at the same time as you want, and there’s no time limit after deleting a site before you can create another one. But a free address cannot be re-used once it’s deleted for more than 30 days.
On the other hand, if you completely delete your account, you won’t be able to use the username again, ever, and you’ll only be able to create a new account with the same email address once the email is deleted from the old account after 30 days.
From your description of what you want to do there is no reason to delete either your account or your site.
