Upgrading to a personal account with a custom domain

If someone enters my old domain into the browswer (ex-free.wordpress.com) do they automatically get redirected to my new custom domain (ex-free.com)

Sorry I should mention I am thinking of upgrading my plan to the custom domain address…I just want to know what happens if someone puts in my old domain address

Yes, they would be seamlessly transferred to the new address. Your old WordPress.com address would continue to exist. If at some point in the future you decided not to renew your upgraded plan/custom domain your original WordPress.com address would still be available for you.
