Upgrading to business plan/plug-in help
-
Hi. I’m planning on upgrading to a business plan because I want to install plug-ins. However, I’m being told my site URL would change by installing a plug-in. Why does this happen? Can I avoid it? If not, will the old address at least redirect to the new one?
And last, business plans get domain access for a year. Is that a simple .com URL? Does it renew each year the business plan is extended?
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi @jasonklaczynski, happy to help!
With the way things are set up right now, your site would need a somewhat different infrastructure to add plugins, and you’d get jklaczpokemon.wpcomstaging.com instead. The old address will redirect to the new one though.
The plan comes with a free domain registration or transfer. After that, you’d pay for the domain renewal each year. Pricing depends on which kind of domain you choose — we’ve got a lot more than .com:
OR, you also have the option of connecting a domain that you own through another service. You’d be paying that registrar for renewals, and the connection is free with your paid plan.
By the way, what kind of plugins are you hoping to add? We might have similar features built into our services.

I’m looking to add code into my blog so that images can produce a pop-up effect. The best way to do this, I was told, is by putting the code into a header or footer using a “Insert headers and footers” plug-in. Is there a simpler way to put code into a page without needing a plug-in?
For a business plan, would I be able to get a URL from WordPress that didn’t contain the .wordpress or .wpcomstaging? Or would that have to be obtained through another service?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
so that images can produce a pop-up effect
So a lightbox, where you hover over or click on an image and a larger version of the image pops up in a frame?
We do have something almost like that in our gallery carousel feature, though it might not be exactly what you’re looking for. If you enable that feature in your media settings, the carousel is automatically applied to all image galleries on your site:
https://wordpress.com/support/settings/media-settings/#image-gallery-carousel
Otherwise you’ll need a plugin for this, yes, though personally I’d go with a dedicated image lightbox plugin, rather than something requiring me to add custom code to my site. You can see some options here:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/lightbox/
Is there a simpler way to put code into a page without needing a plug-in?
Using a plugin is actually the simpler option here. Adding code to your site header directly requires creating a child theme, which is a much more complex process.
The Insert headers and footers plugin works very well for this, and is easy to use, though.
For a business plan, would I be able to get a URL from WordPress that didn’t contain the .wordpress or .wpcomstaging? Or would that have to be obtained through another service?
On any of our paid plans you can use a custom domain, yes, and you can buy it directly from us. In fact, if you upgrade to an annual plan, you can register a new domain completely for free, and you’ll only start paying for the domain when it renews the next year.
You can see a list of all the domains we offer here:
