upload html file to wordpress

  I need to verify my site for the Google Search Console.

  I have entered [sitename].wordpress.com/[verification code].html in marketing under ‘Site Verification Services’ and saved settings.

  However this still gives a verification failure: ‘Your verification file was not found in the required location.’

  Please explain how I can correctly verify my site.

  WP.com: Yes
  Jetpack: No
  Correct account: Yes
