  I was told to buy a .com through go daddy and then make my website through you… is that correct.

  You can create a site with a custom domain right here at WordPress.com where you are currently logged in to your new account, or you can log out from here and go and create a site with a custom domain using the WordPress.org software at GoDaddy. Third option would be to buy a .com domain at Godaddy and map it to here (WordPress.com) but that involves paying two different companies.
