Using Sku's on Variable Products

    Help… Getting so frustrated. I really don’t know what to do for the best. So if I have a product, lets say a football trophy. It has 5 sizes all with different prices and individual codes.
    I have no problem setting them up as variable products so I have 5 variables with their own codes (sku), price, color and sizes. However… What do I put in the sku under inventory for the parent? can i leave it blank? do I put the first code in? Does it even matter? I don’t’ want to do 5000 products and then realize I’ve done them all wrong.
    Any experts help?
