Videopress upload from URL (YouTube)
-
I would like to use Videopress to host my videos that I already have on my YouTube channel (potentially discontinue my YouTube channel). Is it possible to import those videos to Videopress, without having to do major coding? I’m not looking to embed the videos, but rather upload to Videopress. I would prefer to transfer from there, as they are HD and would take a tremendous amount of time to upload them again.
Thanks!

Frequently Asked Questions
I just want to embed videos from external websites on my blog – do I need VideoPress? No, VideoPress is not needed to embed videos on your WordPress.com blog from external websites. Read about embedding videos from other supported websites on your blog. VideoPress is a powerful solution for video publishers who upload their own media files.

I have read them, that part in particular. I tried to make it very clear that I am migrating away from YouTube, NOT embedding. I know Videopress allows you to pull in a video from a remote URL.That is why I was wondering if it was possible to pull the video from the already hosted file. Re-uploading hundreds of high definition videos would be extremely time-consuming.

Hi there,
There’s no way to “transfer” your videos from Youtube to VideoPress, no. That would require Youtube having an API allowing us to directly access video files on their servers, and us having an importer that can make use of that API. Youtube’s API does not allow this, from what I can find. Their API only allows you to upload videos to Youtube or embed videos already uploaded there, not to export videos from their side to another service.
The only way to move your videos to VideoPress is to upload them to your WordPress.com media library, either via the Add Media button in the post editor, or the Media library in My Sites and WP-Admin.
Note that to use Video Press you’ll need at least the Premium Plan, but if you have hundreds of HD videos I’m guessing 13GB of storage won’t be sufficient so you’ll probably need the Business Plan with unlimited storage instead.

Thanks for the feedback, both of you.
My plan is to go Jetpack premium for my self-hosted site. Is there a demo for Videopress that I can test upload a couple files? This is a big move and I just want to make sure I won’t have any issues with compatibility and transfer. If this site’s videos work, I’ll setup multiple sites/channels this way.
Thank you, again!

There isn’t a demo like this, no, but Jetpack plans can be activated on a monthly basis, so for a test you can add Jetpack Premium for a month at $9 and see how it works for you.
If you have more questions specifically about VideoPress for self-hosted sites, you can contact the Jetpack team here:
While I’m happy to try and answer any questions you have, and while there’s similarities between VideoPress on WordPress.com and VideoPress in Jetpack, this forum is really for WordPress.com sites, not self-hosted/Jetpack sites, and my knowledge of Jetpack is not as complete as the team that works directly on that product :)
