View Count Doesn’t Match Viewer Count

I know the view count and visitor counts aren’t going to be in sync. However, when I have 5,000+ reads with only 300+ visitors, and similar numbers have gone on for the past few days, my paranoia kicks in. Is there a glitch somewhere or is somebody honestly reading the daylights out of my site?
The site in question is bwspotlight.com (or alternately bwmedia.wordpress.com).

A massive jump in views relative to visitors (like 5,000+ views from just 300 visitors) usually happens for two main reasons. First, automated web crawlers, search engine indexers, or RSS feed readers might be repeatedly hitting multiple pages on your site; while Jetpack Stats filters out standard bot traffic, aggressive scrapers can occasionally bypass those filters. Second, an embedded asset, external widget, or page auto-refresh script could be firing multiple view tracking events per session.

So is there anything I can do about it? It kind of mess up my stats so I can’t get a fair assessment of how I’m doing. I’ve had a spike now and then, like when a popular site stumbles on it and links to it, but this is just suspicious.

I took a look into this, and here’s what the numbers show.
On your highest-traffic days, your top individual post only accounts for a small fraction of total views, and Referrers (mostly Search Engines) don’t come close to explaining the full total either. The traffic is also overwhelmingly US-based, so it’s not a foreign bot cluster in the way we sometimes see. Put together, this points to views that are spread thinly across many pages on your site rather than concentrated reader interest, which is a common signature of automated crawler or scraper traffic rather than real visitors.Jetpack Stats automatically filters out most recognized bots, but it can’t catch all, so some of this traffic can still show up as views: https://wordpress.com/support/stats/understand-your-sites-traffic/
There isn’t a setting on your end to filter this further; that detection happens automatically on our side, and there’s no manual control to tune it. So while the numbers may look strange, this isn’t a sign of a problem with your site, and it’s not something you need to take any action on.
I’d treat your visitor count as the more reliable measure of real reader engagement for now. -
