Views and visitors statistic

    Hi,

We have had an ongoing problem with the ‘views’ and ‘visitors’ aspect of this blog’s statistics – if I view the statistics of this blog, is it not always accurate. For example, the amount of pages viewed or amount of visitors is not always accurate. We have tested this out a few times. One example is this past Friday, I was doing some work on this blog and viewed some 80 pages as a visitor – as in, not logged into the account. However, the total views from the day is 17. We had expected the views to reflect the work that I did as well as other views. We have noticed this on several occasions, where a view that we know has occured has not shown up in the statistics, same as the amount of visitors is not reflected as we would have expected.

Is there anything I am misunderstanding about this feature, anything that has gone wrong, or any reason for this?

    Thank you.

  • Hi there,

Your question is for aallanbiss.wordpress.com or is this an issue with another site you have with a different account?

The reason I ask is because aallanbiss.wordpress.com does not seem to have any recent traffic, not even the 17 visits you mention above. If you can let us know the URL of the site you are having stats issues with we can take a closer look, thanks!

  • Thanks for the address.
Could you tell us a little bit more about how you tested this? When you were working on your blog last Friday, how were you making sure you were not logged in when viewing the blog?
Were you then visiting different blog pages, and those views were not reflected in the Post&Pages views in your stats?

If you could walk us through your process when testing this, it could give us more information. Thank you!

    Hi,

It is not my blog, but a client of mine.

So, to test this, he will work on the blog on his computer. He will then email me a link, to open the pages. In this case it was some 80 pages to look at. I then opened these on my computer. I do not have the login to the blog so I was not logged in, and was using an entirely different computer.

Yes, I was visiting some 80 different blog pages. My client then checked the stats for the blog on the following Monday, and found the issue that I described. As in, the pages I had viewed were not recognised by the blog stats.

  • Oh, I see. Do you have third-party cookies enabled in your browser? We use those to count visits in stats.

RE cookies, I believe I have had these enabled when checking the blog. Please see the below message from my client which may help to explain, or re-explain, the situation:

A friend of mine, is doing some work for me, but the effects of their work – does not make any sense, in what you report on WordPress. I will now explain a bit more.

My friend, did some checking on my Blog. She checked some work I did, which meant she needed to go into 80 pages, and check if they were okay on her own machine. Her machine informed her, that all 80 were okay.

She used her own password, not mine. However, the usual work of outsiders, usually shows visitation of 80 pages by one person.

That is what should happen, but the visit to 80 pages, in the UK – is not recorded. It only shows 2 people from UK went into both VIEWS and VISITORS.

This is what I actually have showing
    Views 17

    Visitors 15

UK Views 2, other countries views 17 (inc UK of 2). That is 15 outside UK, plus 2 in UK.

I am wondering, why it only says 2 , for UK. These as both Views AND Visitors. It should show at least 80?

Please now very seriously, look into this, advise and correct – so that my Blog gives correct information – of ACTUALLY my TRUE ACTIVITY of readers etc. I believe, it should be about 30 times higher, than it is recording.
Please now give true information, without causing anything at all, of my Blog to get lost or ruined. Thanks.

The following traffic will not reflect in your stats:

    • Visits you make to your own publicly-available site while logged into your WordPress.com account.
    • Visits from browsers that do not execute javascript or load images.
    • Googlebot and other search engine spiders.
    • Visits to a publicly available site by users that are logged in, and listed as members of the site.

Additionally, stats aren’t reported in real time but instead can take up to a couple of hours to reflect in your stats dashboard.

Everything we see on our end is working properly. We have no way to know what this friend’s browser or other installed software handled the traffic – if they have third party cookies or other tracking scripts blocked in their browser, their activity would not be recorded.

Our stats feature requires the use of third party cookies and javascript in order to record those views. Again, we can’t control what the behavior is for each individual’s browser with relation to our stats. Most browser updates have been including those anti-tracking features and they can be enabled by default.

If your client needs more granular control over their stats than what we provide, they can use Google Analytics as part of the WordPress.com Premium plan or higher.

Again, from our investigations, everything is working properly, so there’s nothing we can do on our end to change that data.

    Hope that clarifies things.
