Hi,
Its happening because you have not selected any default page yet. Please follow below process. Go to your_site->Appearance->Customize
On the next screen click Homepage Settings
From here you can display “A static page” or “Your latest posts”For static page- Please select the default homepage from dropdown. Please see Screenshot You can select specific post also.
For displaying latest post- You can select the latest post.

I chose the current theme because I wanted a very specific arrangement as show in WordPress ad. Is there a way I can retain current look and go live?
If I choose static or anything else the current layout of homepage goes away. I only get the option of adding the blog on homepage. -

If you want to add static page, definitely you will have to add page from you_site->Pages->Add new.
