Want to redirect from xy-domain.ch to xy-domain.org

    Hi WP team

    A couple of questions related to setting up a website redirect

    A friend owns the .org domain above – call it xy-domain.org from now on, which is registered through WordPress.com and has a WordPress.com website at this domain name. I am not sure what plan they have with this, but either Personal or Premium

    This website is associated with activities in Switzerland

    As such they would like to setup a redirect from xy-domain.ch to xy-domain.org , so clearly they will first need to register/own the domain xy-domain.ch … The domain xy-domain.ch is not registered anywhere / by anyone at the moment

    So my questions are, asking on behalf of my friend

    1) Can my friend register xy-domain.ch (ie a swiss .CH domain) through WordPress.com, or must they go through another registrar, ie a Swiss registrar (which they could do anyway) ?

    2) If they can register xy-domain.ch through WordPress.com, then how much will it cost per year ? – so this is just the domain registration, ie there need not be any website or anything else associated with it

    3) I assume then, if registered at WordPress.com, they can then setup a redirect within WordPress.com … Can you tell me where they would do this ?

    4) Then, when the redirect is setup, does WP.com make sure that people don’t get SSL cert mis-match errors when they type into their browser the .ch Url, eg https://xy-domain.ch ?

    Hi there,

    .ch domains cannot be registered through WordPress.com. They’ll have to register it through some other provider and then connect it to their WordPress.com site.

    If they connect it to the WordPress.com site with the domain xy-domain.org, then it’ll automatically redirect to it.

    As for the SSL certificate, this is installed on the website, not on the domain. So, as long as they host their site with us they’ll have an SSL certificate, no matter how many domains they have pointed to that site.

    OK thanks for the info … that clears things up – I will tell them they need to register the .ch domain with a swiss registrar and then redirect to the .org domain from there
