Website

I had a website created for a TV show in 2012. The person who created it, sent me the username and password, and I accessed it frequently When I later deleted my domain name (because the site was no longer needed), it eliminated my own access to the website. Recently when I created a website on WIX, I was able to access the site for myself using the log in info, even though I had deleted the domain name. I can’t seem to do this with Word Press. Why?

  • Hi there!

What’s the address of the site you’re working on?

From your WordPress.com account, you will only be able to access a site that is hosted on our servers or one hosted elsewhere but connected with Jetpack. Such a site would have to be created using WordPress software, though, and, from what you’re saying, it sounds like yours might be created on Wix.

The website was created in WordPress. The domain name was hosted by 1 and 1 Ionos.
The name of the site was”girlfriend to girlfriend”. It was a TV show that filmed suggestions for weekend trips.

The person who created the site sent me the user ID and the Password. I used that for months to go to the site. Eventually, I got rid of the domain name and the site went with it.

My reference to WIX was a site I created 2 years ago, and when I got rid of the domain name, WIX told me that I still would have access to that site, although no one else would.

One thing I will say about WIX is they are free and you can actually speak to someone on the phone! I can’t do that with WordPress. This could be cleared up if I were able to do that.

  • Hi @roneerenee, we’re a distributed company and not in a call center, but we do have direct support with all of our paid plans for sites hosted here.

The domain name was hosted by 1 and 1 Ionos.

It sounds like it was hosted by 1 and 1, possibly using the free software. If you had hosted a site here on our servers and added a domain to it, we would still have the content.

I tried searching for “girlfriend to girlfriend” and had over a million and a half results. But if you will tell us what the domain was (www.________.com for example) we can check to see if it was hosted here, and if it was, your content is likely still here too.

This is what I had on my notes from that time: Domain Info: admin.1and1.com; ID# 14764977; password, lovecats

    The Word Press info: [redacted]
The log in URL for my website: http://www.roneerenee.com

That is all the info she supplied when she set up the website.

    Thank you.

  • I’m removing the login info — remember these forums are public.

roneerenee.com was never hosted here, so we would not have backups of it. Your web developer may have a backup, or the host may have one. We don’t have one because we were not the host.

If nobody has backups, you might be able to pull some information off of this site which does its best to archive the web:

You would be welcome to start a new site here. I’d recommend copying the text from each page and post, and copying and re-uploading images if you can. Then you can work on the formatting.

Amazing. I clicked on that site and there was my website. Now can you tell me how to save it?

The only thing I could think of was to email it to my gmail account and then save the email??? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hi there,

Amazing. I clicked on that site and there was my website. Now can you tell me how to save it?

To clarify, that is a link to the “internet archive” which is an independent site (we’re not related to) that takes snapshots of all the sites it finds on the internet as a historical archive. There is not a way to “save your site” from that link due to the way they take their snapshots.

I think @supernovia was mentioning it as a backup of sorts. If you are not able to find the previous data for your site it does at least offer you a place you can go to copy/paste things you used to have on your site.

I’m afraid there is nothing more I can think of. I can confirm the site roneerenee.com was never hosted on WordPress.com but with another “web host” instead. I’m not able to see who that past web host was however. If you recall the name of the company you hosted your site with you may be able to contact them to see if they still have your site in their backups, which is the only other option there is to consider if you recall the company name.
