Hi there,
Yes, you can. You can transfer or map your domain name on WordPress.com and you can even transfer your content.
Here’s how to use your domain on WordPress.com:

and here’s how to move your content here as well:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

thank you – I am not an expert at this sort of thing and wonder if it would be easier just to close my Danish website and start all over again using the same name as my blog.

That is entirely up to you.
However, I should first ask, what is the domain you want to use here?
I ask specifically as it’s not possible to transfer a .dk domain to WordPress.com, so if your existing domain is a .dk and you want to keep using it, you will need to keep it registered at the current provider and connect it here using a process called domain mapping instead.
So in that sense, and if a .dk domain is not crucial to you, it might be simpler to start fresh with a new domain here.
Also just keep in mind that you likely paid for a full year already on your existing domain, and if you cancel it now you might not receive a refund – you’ll need to speak to your current provider in that regard.
As for your site’s content, you’re the only one able to judge whether it’s worth moving it here or just starting over :)
